Couples Counseling

Couples Counseling is needed when the lines of communication in a marriage or partnership have broken down, making it impossible to relate to one another in a mutually beneficial way.

It benefits both parties to have an advocate and confidant in a mate. If there is resentment there is withdrawal. If there is a list of inequities on either or both sides that has not been discussed, processed and mitigated. Then there cannot be healthy, open, frank discussion.

My role in couples therapy is not necessarily to help my clients to stay together despite all that has gone on between them. Often the best thing for both parties is to make a fresh start, but if they don't figure out why they can't have a healthy relationship with the person they are with they are likely to have an unhealthy relationship with the next and the next. Couples therapy is an opportunity for personal growth that most people don't take advantage of because they think it is about keeping the relationship together.

Although couples who go to counseling improve their odds at staying together by becoming better at the relationship. What they learn they can take into all their relationships. Learning to be forgiving, trusting, honest, open, and direct are skills to take into all our relationships. Learning to share your thoughts, and feelings in a truthful and timely manner are essential to all individuals trying to have meaningful communication.

Choosing the right therapist for couples therapy is not always easy, but for the couple who have found the right therapist at the right time...it is valuable beyond measure.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever you endeavor, if you are looking for and couples therapist in the Tampa Bay area please consider me.
